Sing Like Johnny Cash – The lyric starts out with my dear, departed mother advising me to learn how to sing like Johmmy Cash. Okay, Mom would not have told me that. She wasn’t that big a Johnny fan. But artistic license aside, it’s still a fun tune with a bit of a message.

Lyrics

Sing Like Johnny Cash

Ver.1: When I was just a growin’ boy my mama said
Son it’s a joy
To watch you grow and you are growin’ fast.”
“There’s many paths that you can choose. On
some you win. On some you lose.”
"So do your best and have yourself a blast.”

Ver.2: I said, “Ma, whatchoo talkin’ about. If this is guidance leave me out.”
“I’m gonna be a star and write a smash.”
She said, “Okay, if that’s your dream but things ain’t always what they seem.”
“You’d better learn to sing like Johnny Cash.”

Chorus: So I did, though perhaps not quite as good.
But I did, I swear, the best I could.

Ver.3: Well I worked for years to get it right through ups and downs and lonely nights,
on endless roads, footloose and livin’ fast.
And one thing that I really learned is that it’s hard to try to earn the
privilege to sing like Johnny Cash.

Chorus: But I did, though perhaps not quite as good.
But I did, I swear, the best I could.

Ver.4: Well I learned that life’s an uphill grade. Some times are tough. Mistakes are made.
You pick yourself up ‘n’ try to move on fast
And I learned it ain’t about the star, it’s more about the man you are.
I think that’s how you sing like Johnny Cash.

Chorus: So I did, though perhaps not quite as good.
But I did, I swear, the best I could…ahh, take us home son………
